August 2024 Message from Foundation Executive Board Member – Doug Clarke

Having been born and raised in North Ogden, I can think of no other place I’d rather be – nestled at the base of the mountain – a proud father of five, and (almost) two grandchildren. As the owner of Clarke’s Market, and a past member of the North Ogden Parks and Recreation committee, I’ve contributed to local projects like North Shore, Barker Park, and the skate park. I’ve coached softball for many years and served as the State Commissioner of the USA Softball Junior Olympic committee. My life consists of my family, my religion, my business, and serving on the board of the Major Brent Taylor Foundation.

I am passionate about uniting people around a common cause. Whether it’s faith, a way of life, or patriotism. Our country’s flag brings people together.

Serving on the Foundation board has deepened my understanding of our community and fostered lasting friendships. Whether at a funeral, or hanging the Major flag in Coldwater Canyon, together we’ve experienced a range of emotions – love, gratitude, and spirit. We have done many missions with the Foundation, most recently, flying the flag over Washington Boulevard in downtown Ogden for Pioneer Day. This was an excellent opportunity for the Foundation to work with the city, state, and local businesses.

My father, a U.S. Air Force veteran, instilled in me a deep respect for the flag. He taught us by example – hanging a flag at his home, and when taking it down, either humming, whistling, or singing the Air Force Anthem, “Wild Blue Yonder.” His passing in 2019, following the first Flight of the Flag, renewed my commitment to serving my community and family.

As a result, my service in my church increased. My service to my family became apparent, and I knew I needed to hold onto something in the community. Because of my friendship with the Taylors, and my father’s inspiring love of the flag, I knew this was where and what I needed to be doing. Being a part of the Foundation and embracing its values of honor, respect, and legacy aligns with the principles my father taught me.

I am honored to work with Jennie and the Foundation team, and I cherish the opportunity to contribute to our shared mission.
